  • Largely Buddhist country, circa 97% of the population
  • Home of the world famous Angkor temples
  • Spent much of its history under occupation by the French
  • Officially gained independence in 1953
  • Suffered under the brutal Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979, during which time a genocide was carried out in which up to 3,000,000 people were killed (around 25% of the population at the time)
  • Suffers from a lack of basic infrastructure and ingrained corruption
