Country Profile

  • Capital = Vientiane
  • Population = circa 6,803,699
  • Largely Buddhist country, circa 66% of the population
  • Spent much of its history under occupation by the French
  • Officially gained independence in 1949
  • Around a third of the population lives below the international poverty line
  • Has a poor human rights record, including past genocide against its Hmong population
  • Suffers from lack of basic infrastructure and ingrained corruption. Is thought to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world

AHHA Laos’s Impact

  • Established 2011
  • Currently no central headquarter, but looking to establish one in Vientiane
  • Recently gained official NGO status from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Education
  • Receive a commission from the Ministry of Education to help expand AHHA’s work in Laos
  • 5 centers nationwide
  • 22 full-time boarding students, all of who have been studying at trainee teacher level for the past 3 to 5 months
  • Over 2,000 students taught since inception
  • 3 projects overall (see ‘Education; Projects’ for details)

    • Partner school program
