Frequently Asked Questions

This is an opportunity to work together with similarly passionate and capable individuals, revolutionising education for poor communities. As a volunteer, you will be stepping out of your comfort zone, facing out-of-the ordinary challenges; you will learn, adapt and conquer experiences you never knew existed.

A wise man once said, “Challenges allow you to discover things about yourself that you never really knew. They’re what make the instrument stretch – what make you go beyond the norm.” Throughout this experience you will gain invaluable life skills, as well as proven experience in community development, teaching, leadership, communication skills and many more.

This is not a problem. The system we use to teach is unique, easy to learn and interactive. You only need to be able to speak and understand English. You will be provided with full training and teaching resources on arrival as well as daily guidance and support whenever you need it.

When you are involved with volunteering you will be offering your time and skills voluntarily teaching as a full time teacher in one of unique teaching centres in your chosen country. You do not need a degree to teach, just the ability to speak and understand the English language. This formula is the same for media, office and more if you are a skilled or experienced professional with commitment and passion to share!

As an intern, you will be based at one of our office Headquarters where depending on your application, you will undertake your specified office work alongside teaching. You will either have a degree or be in the process of obtaining one, meaning your work will become subsidiary to your studies. This is a valuable way to build on your course theory with the opportunity to apply work experience in the real world.

Teaching is a very enriching experience, whilst the patience and creativity you need to become a good teacher is immensely valuable for personal growth. As they say, you learn more whilst you teach. Teaching actively aids practice in clear communication, compassion, mentoring, planning and preparation, adaptation, time management, innovation, leadership, constructive criticism, flexibility, presentation skills and most importantly, the ability to read and understand people.

To make a positive impact, arrive with passion and commitment, and expect to leave with a wealth of knowledge. Whilst you are here we encourage our volunteers to travel, explore experiences, share knowledge and befriend local students, expanding your horizons both inside and outside the classroom.

We put great emphasis upon training and preparation for our volunteers before they are placed in a centre. Firstly, you will begin at the Headquarters and be trained for a few days on our Science of Language System. You will also have the chance to observe and assist classes in the headquarters, allowing you to gain actual teaching experience before leaving for the provinces.

As part of our objectives to empower communities through foundation education, you will have the opportunity to come up with your own projects/activities whenever inspiration strikes you. This will give you a platform to share your passion and skills. Be it arts & crafts, cooking, gardening, sport or martial arts, it will always met with genuine excitement and curiosity amongst the community.

AHHA Education will only be able to make the decision on which centre you will be placed in after you have completed initial training. The decision will be based on your arrival date, completion of training, and your preference (where possible) to be placed in particular areas of your chosen country. If you are working as an intern you will always be placed in the central Headquarters of the country.

Most of the students in full time centres are youth between 16 and 29 years old, but in part-time centres it is also possible to teach students from as young as 7 years old. Everyone is welcome!

No, we do not believe in charging for volunteering, ever. Accommodation, three local meals per day are provided free of charge in exchange for your time and commitment to our cause. Thank you!

Yes, visas will differ specifically to each of the countries that AHHA Education operates in. Remember to check the specific guidelines for every country you are visiting to be sure it is valid for your citizenship identity. We are more than happy to help advise you as to which visa is best for you, although AHHA Education unfortunately cannot cover your visa costs.

Flight expenses to and from countries cannot be provided.

To really make an impact we would like you to stay for a minimum of 6 months. If you would like to stay for a shorter period, please contact us about the possibilities by emailing to join.ahhaeducation@gmail.com.

Volunteers will be working with the poor both in urban and rural settings. They will also be working closely with the community and living together in local life. Volunteers and interns may experience some challenges regarding language barriers, cultural differences and physical or environmental working conditions but of course this is all part of the experience.

  • Physical working conditions:

Volunteers work in an environment where the school and office facilities are basic, much of which has been hand built and decorated by the students and volunteers themselves. AHHA Education believes in an open-plan community concept, thus our offices and classrooms have minimal barriers such as walls, doors and pillars meaning there is a certain level of noise volunteers must work with.

  • Environmental working conditions:

Operating in developing countries, many have lower standards on environmental cleanliness which you will experience particularly on the outskirts of larger cities. Many of the rural provinces are blessed with outstanding scenery (which offsets the culture swaps!) and many countries split between two wet and dry seasons. During dry seasons, temperatures can reach up to 37°c or more so come equipped with light, modest clothing you can be comfortable in.

Ideally AHHA Education aims for no more than 40 contact hours per week, with weekends and evenings off – however this may vary with each centre. The office teams work Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. You will also be free whenever local public holiday celebrations are scheduled.

A typical workday in AHHA Education will be quite busy and very diverse, sometimes challenging but always fulfilling:

  • 7.00am: Wake up for devotionals (optional)
  • 7.30am: Breakfast
  • 8.00am: Classes
  • 12.00pm: Lunch break
  • 3.00pm: Classes
  • 6.00pm: Dinner
  • 6.30pm: Devotionals (optional)
  • 8.00pm: Evening activities [dances, social night, movies, team building, self-study]
  • 9.30pm: Wrap up and rest

You can join students whenever you like during prayer time; eat together, do sports together, watch a film together or join one of the many other social activities. Students love to practice their English with you!

Bringing light, comfortable clothing for hot weather will be beneficial. We operate on a smart-casual dress code which must be modest to respect all different religious backgrounds our students come from. Covering shoulders in particular is appreciated (plus avoids sunburn!)

If you are working in the office, it can be beneficial for you to bring your own laptop if you own one, but not essential. We have PC computers for you to work on but are more than happy for you to use your own. Mosquito nets can be handy which you can often purchase locally for very cheap and bringing your own spoon is a daily blessing to enjoy on many occasions!

Please check with your local health department for the full list of recommended vaccinations.

The application process follows these steps:

  1. Read FAQ above and information on the website.
  2. Complete (attach your CV & Letter) and submit application form on our website
  3. Please consult our work FAQ section or email join.ahhaeducation@gmail.com for more information.
